軸索はその細長い構造を維持するために長い細胞

骨格を有する。この細胞骨格は細胞体で合成された

物質を軸索の先端まで輸送するためのレールとして

も振舞う。また軸索は細胞内外のイオンの濃度勾配

を利用して情報を伝達するが、そのため軸索表面に

は多くのイオンチャネルが存在する。軸索が細胞体

から伸び始める場所は軸索小丘（axon hillock、

または軸索起始部、axon initial segment）と

呼ばれており、イオンチャネルが高密度で存在する。





軸索の一部にはグリア細胞が巻きついて出来た、髄

鞘（ミエリン）と呼ばれる構造を持つ。髄鞘を構成する

細胞は、中枢神経系ではオリゴデンドロサイト、また

末梢神経系ではシュワン細胞である。髄鞘は脂質二

重層で構成された細胞膜が何十にも巻きつく形で構

成されており、脂質は絶縁体の性質を持つためイオ

ン電流の漏洩を防ぐ。また、電気的信号の伝達速度

を上げる効果を持つ跳躍伝導にも寄与している。髄

鞘のある軸索を有髄線維、ない軸索を無髄線維と呼

ぶ。髄鞘に対して核の存在する外側の部分を神経

鞘といい、髄鞘を持たない神経を無髄神経という。こ

こで注意したいのは無髄神経は神経鞘は持っている
