AKB48's latest single, "Sayonara Crawl", was released on May 22nd. On its first day of sales, the single sold 1,450,881 copies, easily breaking the record for most copies of a singles sold in a single day.

The single's strong singles are heavily driven by the group 5th annual Senbatsu General Election. Each copy of the single allows fans to vote in the election, so the more copies you buys, the more you can influence the outcome of the election.

Preliminary results of the 5th Senbatsu General Election were released today. Rino Sashihara led the election with more than 28,000 votes, nearly twice as much as the runner up, Mayu Watanabe. The final results of the election will be revealed on June 6th.

Prior to "Sayonara Crawl", the single with the strong first day sales was "Manatsu no Sounds Good", the single that allowed fans to vote in the 2012 Senbatsu General Election. That single sold 1,170,554 in its first day of release and went on to sell 1,822,220 copies, the most copies of any of the group's singles.
