B2Y is a mixed-gender 4-member group which debuted in South Korea on August 21, 2009 under Loen Entertainment. Their names started out as a shortening of the English word, “binary” (a play on how they have two sides, boys and girls) but was changed to BabyBoys To YearningGirls to be more accessible to the public.
With members born in 1988 – Park Jin Woong, Lika, Naraand and the eldest member Ahn Soon Yong (stage name: HanYeon) (26), the band has brought the disco craze to the teenagers. Normally for a group, one to two of the members are the main vocal and the others are rapping and dancing, but for B2Y there are 3 main vocals and 1 rapper.
They have brought up the retro craze with songs of the same feelings as ABBA’s ‘Mamma Mia’ and Grease’s ‘Saturday Night Fever’. Even though this is the genre which people in their 30s and 40s will be familiar with, this group targets the teenager listeners.
All 4 members are vocally strong, know how to play musical instruments and they are also winners at ‘UlJjang competition’.
Rika, who took part in the musical ‘Rent’ in 2009, is also known to be the merry-maker of the group.
JinWoong who is currently in a theatre group at university, was the lead vocal to a downtown rock band.
Nara, who graduated from national arts high school, won a daesang at the national traditional music competition performing the gayageum.
HanYeon, who is the leader of the group, debuted as a uljjang model and is versed in drums percussion performance.
The group is groomed by Lee JungMoo, known for collaborating with Kim JongKook and Jo SungMo etc for a few years.
