Aoi (葵), born as Shiroyama Yuu (城山 優) on January 20th, 1979 in Mie, Kansai (we suspect in Matsusaka), is best known as the rhythm guitarist of popular JRock band, the GazettE.
He was born in a small city in the Mie prefecture of the Kansai region. He was raised in a complete family of two parents, an older sister, and an older brother.
From a young age (middle school) he decided on being a guitarist/rockstar after hearing the records of X Japan (I believe his hero was Hide). In a family where both his parents had to work to sustain a family (rare occurance in Japan), following his dreams was difficult.
According to an interview, Aoi's older brother gave him an electric guitar once. However, he didn't know it was broken until he lugged his mother out a few hours away to buy an amplifier and plugged it in. Reportedly, he "Just sat there in the middle of the room and cried". When his mother yelled at his brother for such "heinous deeds", that's when his brother reluctantly gave him an acoustic guitar.
Since then, Aoi learned to master the instrument by learning songs from ear, receiving primitive instructions from his brother's cover-band bandmates, and teaching himself. In his band, the GazettE, he is the acoustic guitar player.
In 2002, Aoi was recruited into his current band (the GazettE) along with Yune, a drummer, from their disbanded visual band, Artia. At that time, he and Yune decided that GazettE would be their last visual kei band if nothing works out.
In 2003 as a side-note, Yune did leave the band and was replaced by a new drummer, Kai.
In 2010, Aoi created an official Twitter account.
In 2011, after so many successful years with the GazettE, Aoi (and Ruki) joined the PS Carnival as a semi-solo artist with his "new band" (temporary) bon:cra-z (or better known as Aoi with bon:cra-z).
On August 3rd of 2011, he deleted his Twitter account for unknown reasons, but returned with a Facebook as well as a Twitter on the day of their 10th anniversary, March 9th/10th, 2012 (discretion due to time difference).
Aoi is very good friends with the members of other bands like Chiyu (SuG), Mizuki (Sadie), Kazuki (ScReW), Hitsugi (Nightmare), and others. According to his Twitter, Aoi stays up late to drink with his friends often and eats out all the time.
