South Korean singer Shion, who has kept low in the music industry due to her drug arrest and attempted suicide back in 2009, is releasing a new digital single titled distance on 7/11 on Chaku-uta, and 7/25 for PC downloads.
Beginnings
Shion, born as Park Yu Ka (朴有香), was born in Yokohama and got her first break in 2008. She released her first album Candy Girl in May 28, 2008 and it debuted at #9 on the Oricon album chart, becoming the first indie album in the history of the Oricon to land in the Top 10. Her first single, Last Song, was released in August of that year and her second single, Rain of Tearz/Girlicious feat. DJ Go, released in April 2009. It debuted at #6 on the Oricon singles chart. Her subsequent albums, w/z Friendz and Truth, peaked at #11 and #7 respectively.
In October of 2009, Shion announced a hiatus due to a polyp discovered on her throat.
Drug Arrest
While she was enjoying plenty of success as a new artist, things took a turn for the worse in the latter half of 2009. On December 10, 2009, police searched Shion's home as part of a separate investigation. She was arrested for possession of 0.003g (3 milligrams) of ketamine. Ketamine is a medicinal drug used for anesthesia purposes, such as emergency surgeries. In small doses, it can be used to treat complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), a disease characterized by intense pain and swelling of the skin. However, it is also used as a club drug at times. It can have dangerous side affects like dizziness or hallucinations, making it a risky drug to use. For what purpose Shion was using the drug for is unknown.
Aftermath
Shion confessed to all the charges and received a 1-year suspended jail sentence. All her merchandise was stripped from stores and she was dropped from her label. During her case Shion confessed to attempting suicide back in October of 2009. Shion stated that she believed that because of the polyp, she'd never be able to sing again. It was that fear that caused her to attempt suicide. At the end of the trial, Shion cried, saying she yearned to sing once again. She laid low for the most part, releasing some minor singles in 2011, but now has finally been picked up by Universal Music Japan and has been given another chance to fulfill her dream of singing again.

The song begins with a pretty piano melody and leads into Shion's singing. Take a listen.
