Nogizaka46 Beats Sashihara Rino for Oricon Top Spot!

The massively promoted rivalry between AKB48's Sashihara Rino debut solo single (Soredemo Suki Dayo) and Nogizaka46 2nd single (Oide Shampoo) has finally come to an end after a week of fierce battle. Both singles are released on 2nd May.

Results:
Oide Shampoo - Nogizaka46 (156,000 copies - Rank 1)
Soredemo Suki Dayo - Sashihara Rino (124,000 copies - Rank 2)
*Results are for the week of 14th May on the Oricon fiscal calendar.

For the 1st day, Nogizaka46 beats Sashihara Rino by a huge margin with 111,000 copies to 57,000 copies respectively. Nevertheless, from Day 2 to Day 7, Sashihara Rino claims all the #1 spot, beating out Nogizaka46 by a small margin, thus minimising the sales gap by the end of the week.

However, Avex reported that all sales from the theater version of Soredemo Suki Dayo is NOT counted in the Oricon charts. Oricon's policy states that only releases with 4 songs or under (excluding instrumental tracks) will be regarded as a single release. Soredemo Suki Dayo theater version contains 5 songs, thus only Type A to C sales are counted as they only contains 3 songs.

Regardless, both did very well on the charts. Comparing to other AKB48 front members solo releases recently, Sashihara Rino beats Itano Tomomi's 10nen Go no Kimi e, while falling slightly behind Watanabe Mayu's Synchro Tokimeki.
Nogizaka46 2nd single 1st week sales improved from their debut single 1st week sales, allowing them to claim the #1 spot on the Oricon weekly charts for the 1st time. Congratulations to both!

Even Super-pushed-Sasshi couldn't manage it huh? I'm surprised the official competition is doing so well honestly. Oricon's rules are kinda funny, but I suppose most companies like that probably do something similar. It's not like there's a close cutoff between single and album that requires careful delineation, but I suppose bigger singles have more value so it's unfair to those that still put out rinky-dink 2 song singles. Still kinda weird that some versions are disqualified, maybe they should re-examine the rules.

A single is supposed to be one song. Anything else is an extra. 4 songs is pushing into EP territory.

But I kinda feel bad because, as far as I'm aware, the theatre version only had the 5 songs with no karaoke versions or DVD extras, making it the shortest of all the versions.

Physical singles have pretty much never meant just one song. They've meant one major A side song, and a B side. Maxi single has one A side and then more than one B side. EP has come to mean 4ish songs that are all, or at least majority A side. Basically, the point is, depending on the artist, singles range from 2-4 songs... and most albums are like 10-15, and that leaves a pretty massive gap... the theater version is basically just a single type compilation anyway, so in some sense it's the "true" release and everything else is just a fragment of it.

this whole rivalry thing is just a ploy to promote the 48 family more lol.... srsly for anyone to think it as a 'real rivalry' ... no really it isn't. it's just aki-p's idea to promote the girls more :p
