AKIRA of EXILE stars in Fuji TV's remake of Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO). The first episode of the series received ratings of 15.1% helping AKIRA boost in popularity. Some netizens are saying his acting is even better than the previous Onizuka portrayed by Takashi Sorimachi. The first episode received higher ratings than child actress Mana Ashida's new series Beautiful Rain who raked in only 12.1% on July 1st.
For those of you who don't know, GTO was a manga series written by Tohru Fujisawa that serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1997 to 2002. This manga was adapted into an anime and also a live action TV series in 1998. GTO is about a 22-year old ex-bike gang leader, Onizuka Eikichi, who teaches at Holy Forest Academy. He was put in charge of the infamous class 3-4 full of troublesome students that drove out previous homeroom teachers. Using his own methods of teaching, Onizuka helps transform the lives on his troublesome students one by one.
1998 GTO Opening
Takashi Sorimachi portrayed Onizuka in the 1998 GTO. The 1998 series averaged an amazing 28.4% viewership rating over the 12 episodes that aired. Many people had said AKIRA plays the perfect Onizuka with his darker skin tone and tall build. Along with EXILE's popularity in Japan, many fans of the group will continue to support the new GTO. Some of the cast includes, Miori Takimoto, Yu Shirota, Yusuke Yamamoto, and Haruna Kawaguchi. More information can be found at the official website.

I'm not sure I would say he's better than the first. I mean Takashi Sorimachi is classic plus he sang the theme song! Now I can't get it out of my head....Ah well. Maybe I'm old school

Thats really awesome! this is such a higlight in dorama for me!
I remember the anime was seriously perverted with Onizuka making passes at the underaged students and sometimes succeeding...
It got away with it as humor in the anime because it was just an animated show after all...Hope the live action tones all that stuff down some how.

it is shame that johnny made jin to drop out from this, it would have been nice to see yu-chan and akanishi acting together
