With interest for Japanese music growing steadily in the Philippines, it’s not at all surprising to find a local following for one of the biggest names in Japanese rock, L’Arc~en~Ciel, whose musical prowess and influence now spans 20 years and counting. Laruku, as they are also fondly known among their fans, has recently wrapped up a widely successful world tour, with sold-out shows in London and Jakarta, and a historic concert at the Madison Square Garden in New York.
But first, just what is it about L’Arc~en~Ciel that gets it a growing Filipino fanbase? Japanese animation has been a part of many Filipinos’ lives since childhood and so does the music that comes with it. Rurouni Kenshin, DNA², Great Teacher Onizuka, and Full Metal Alchemist are all popular anime series that continue to usher in Filipinos to Japanese music, and eventually, to the iconic J-rock band. Two of L’Arc~en~Ciel’s albums, Ark and Ray, were even released in the Philippines at the height of J-Music mania in the country.
Taking cue from the momentum of their recent World Tour, L’Arc~en~Ciel soon invited their fans worldwide to vote for their next stops. How did Filipino fans respond to this calling? Of course, by putting their collective efforts together to make Manila one of the band’s destinations in their next World Tour!
Initiated by the L’Arc~en~Ciel Philippine Street Team, the #LArcMNL campaign was kickstarted via social networks, reaching out to current fans and potential lovers of the band’s unique music. The next step then is to gather these local Cielers together not only to meet fellow fans, but also to strengthen the campaign.
If you’re a Filipino Cieler and would like to take part in making #LArcMNL happen, mark your calendars now as the Philippine L’Arc~en~Ciel Street Team is all set to have its first fan meet, aptly called Coming Closer, on September 23, 2012 at Bahay Kalinaw in UP Diliman. Fun-filled activities, exciting games, amazing prizes, and of course, an afternoon filled of L’Arc~en~Ciel music await those who are attending this affair. Come then and join the fun! Put your Laruku knowledge to the test with the L’Arc Quiz, down as many of Tetsu’s bananas as you can in the Mukimpo Eating Contest, and belt out your favorite Laruku tunes in L’Arc~e~oke! To cap the event, attendees will also get to be part of the second campaign video for #LArcMNL, so it’s definitely something you don’t want to miss!
