I hate it with a passion. I am English and am trying to learn Japanese by myself and since forever i knew the differences between the languages (don't ask me how because i don't even know), yet people at my school just disregard the differences and just don't seem to care. It's so frustrating, but i suppose its just they are ignorant because they dont understand.
nope..
don't really care..
I think it's annoying but also I'm sure for some asian, all western languages are the same. It's just a misunderstanding
yes.. and there are many different languages and dialects spoken by Asians
Even if i'm an asian, I don't mind people saying that. It can be confusing because they are from different cultural background. ![]()
sometimes it does irritates me...just like when ppl say that all asians look the same..
Hearing a language is enough for me to know they are different.
I see a lot of people just assuming by sight.
Oh, this person is Asian? Must be Japanese or Chinese.
This happened to my boyfriend not too long ago, a girl thought he was Japanese when he's actually Vietnamese.
Boy, hearing the Vietnamese language though...that's NOT in anyway similar to Japanese.
Yes! They all should go to hell! ![]()
I hate it. It really pisses me off. For the most of people I know - the japanese, the koreans, the vietnamese - they're all the chinese! And for them they all are narrow-eyed. And the only language - chinese! It pisses me off, when people say it. It's wrong, can't they understand? Nope, they can't, about what I talk? Ah~, and this is sad
no don't really care!!!!!!!!!!
OMG I hate that sooooooo friggin much and I live in a rual area so pretty much the majority thinks that way but I'm not like that. Also, what gets me is that when someone says asia, they automatically think china and they think chinese and japanese are the same -_-. In a sense they are similar but NOT THE SAME. :@
It actually bugs me more when people who aren't asian just use those cutsy asian phrases. (ex. Kawaii! ~desu! Hwaiting!) It doesn't bug me when people say that they all sound to the same, because honestly it's just because they aren't used to listening to the language. I think it's more in the enviroment that you were raised in then anything else.
yeah i hate it too!!! japanese and chinese or korean and whatever...there are so many differences!!
I hate the fact that a lot europeans aren't interested in asia at all...I mean asia is a part of this world too!! and not a small one that is!...
This annoys me to no end. If someone ever says this I will go into lecture mode. I'm a History major with a focus in Asian history and I'm minoring in Asian studies/Japanese...believe me when I say that people get an ear full and will hopefully never make that mistake again.
Also, in general saying that different cultures are all the same annoys me. I have a friend from Ghana and people basically just say she is from Africa. It completely disregards someone's culture to lump them into a giant category like that.
Actually, I have to be honest. In writing systems, I can easily distinguish Japanese, Chinese and Korean.
I cannot, however, distinguish differences between written Mandarin and Taiwanese and Cantonese. Nepalese and Thai are difficult for me too.
As for the speaking... I don't understand how people can not hear the difference...
A lot of time, yeah. (- -") That's like saying all European languages are the same, yes?
I hate the "Are you speaking Asian?" or Chinese means: "Ching chong ting tong ling long" (Or the more recent, Mandarin is "Ching chong" and Cantonese is "Ming mong"!) That makes me clap and go, "Congratulations. You've mastered gibberish." People laugh, but I think some people are a bit ignorant to think that it's not rude. Yes, it's a common joke, and I don't expect you to be able to perfectly distinguish each Asian language, but don't use "I'm not Asian" as an excuse and then go make insulting jokes like that. I mean, I get it, I can't distinguish all European or Africa (etc) languages/people apart, but I don't say, "Hey, are you speaking like European? Are you speaking black?"
The main point is: If you can't distinguish the different Asians (this applies to any race or nationality, actually), then ask what language they're using, or don't say anything at all. Just because a joke is common doesn't mean it's right or not insulting to use it. Think a little before you end up stupid. (- -")
Yes, i hate it when that happens!
yes it really bugs me!! I tell some ppl I listen to Kpop then later they say "oh you listen to that asian music!"....... I dont listen to ALL asian music!!
I only listen to some songs in chinese, I listen to jpop and kpop... I gets me so angry!! cuz they think its all the same and its not its different!! but they dont care ofc
Several years ago when I was still learning Japanese, I was quite irritated that people couldn't tell the difference. But the Simplified Chinese, writing-wise, is a HELL of a lot easier than Japanese kanji imo. I can tell the differences between those languages, but it's Mandarin and Cantonese I struggle with. xD; But I do like Mandarin better (the tones are insane though); Cantonese never made sense to me. But yeah, people don't take the time to know the difference because... they don't find the reason and time to. And that happens, so oh well. No biggie...
It's when they direct ching chong bullshit in my face directly, I WILL be offended like a mother eff, however.
;
Though appearance-wise, I will confuse Chinese/Japanese/Koreans up like crazy. We all look alike. Yeah I said it. XD Even the local Chinese people I know get confused with the Korean people here until they start talking and they're all, "Oooh. Korean. Right... GET AWAY FROM ME!!"... wait, that's my man saying. XD
not really...they are just mistaken, once they learn the language then they know it's hard!!!
