About Gackt
Gackt Camui (ガクト; but most often written in Latin alphabet) is a Japanese songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist. He began his rise to fame fronting the band Malice Mizer.

Childhood

Gackt Camui was born in Okinawa, Japan, on July 4th (year unknown, although there is speculation he was born in the year 1973). He has an older sister and a younger brother. Although his mother's vocation is unknown, Gackt has stated on more than one occasion that his father was a jazz musician that played the trumpet.

Gackt was a rambunctious child and enjoyed doing dangerous things. At seven years of age while swimming off the coast of Okinawa, he nearly drowned. After his near-death experience, Gackt claimed the ability to see the dead and speak with deceased family members. His family did not take it seriously but as three years passed, Gackt began to feel uncomfortable with the dismissive treatment and perceived himself as an outsider.

Contrary to popular belief, Gackt has not been institutionalized for claiming to possess a sixth sense. When he was ten, however, he collapsed and was hospitalized for an unknown gastrointestinal problem. According to his autobiography, he was isolated for an extensive amount of time in a pediatric ward of a hospital for extremely sick children. This was a very difficult time for him, as what few friends he had the opportunity to make died soon afterwards from terminal illnesses. He became mentally imbalanced and was denied release. Desperate to escape what he felt was a prison, Gackt imitated his doctors until he was released.

Musical education

When Gackt was three, his parents initiated his classical piano education. By age seven, he had grown tired of the piano lessons his parents forced him to attend and rebelled. Gackt fought with his teacher until when he was finally allowed to quit at eleven years of age.

Gackt's competitive streak drove him back to the piano at 14 when he realized how skilled one of his friends was. As a result, he began learning to play instruments that deviated from the classical standards of music, eventually focusing on contemporary rock. After many years of having no real interest in his parent's classical lessons, his competitive nature made him want to master the piano.

Malice Mizer

Gackt's musical career started when he became the drummer for Cains:Feel. He had started singing when Cains:Feel's guitarist YOU (who later became the guitarist for GacktJOB) jokingly put him up to it. He took on the task and continued with voice lessons. He was approached by Mana, who asked him to join the visual kei band Malice Mizer in 1995 as vocalist and pianist. His style at that point was considerably darker and more gothic than that of his work during his solo career.

His induction into Malice Mizer marked a new period for the band's musical and visual style, which became brighter, more romantic, and began to incorporate elaborate costumes and scenery onstage. Along with a change in style, the band's popularity also increased and they managed to secure a major record label contract. Along with this increase in popularity however, the differences between the band members became greater. Gackt mentioned in his autobiography he wanted to participate in creating music for the band, rather than just singing and writing lyrics. There were other rumors involving affairs with the management that have, as of yet, been unsubstantiated. Gackt left Malice Mizer shortly after their last major single, "Le Ciel," was released and disappeared completely from the media for about 8 months.

Solo career

After leaving Malice Mizer, Gackt started his solo career in 1999 backed by "GacktJOB," initially consisting of You (violin/rhythm guitar), Yukihiro "Chachamaru" Fujimura (lead guitar/effects), Masa (rhythm guitar), Ren (bass), Toshi (drums), Yosh (choreographer/dancer), and Igao (keyboards). GacktJOB later added Ryuichi Ryu Nishida and Ju-ken. His official fanclub is named DEARS.

Masa parted abruptly with GacktJOB accompanied by Toshi in early 2002 to pursue solo activities following the release of "Another World," the first single for Gackt's "Moon" Album. Although Masa has continued his own solo career, Toshi still occasionally provides percussion for Gackt in the studio. For live appearances and the majority of studio recordings, Ryuichi Ryu Nishida has otherwise taken Toshi's place.

Bassist Ren announced during Gackt's "Jougen no Tsuki" tour during the summer of 2003 that he would be taking a break. Later that year, Ren posted assurences to fans on his blog that he would not be leaving GacktJOB permanently but wanted to return less inundating indies scene with his own band, LiN Clover for a while.

Throughout the first and second quarters of 2004, magazine shoots were conducted only with the remaining four members until a TV appearance in March which featured a new bassist. This was later revealed to be Ju-ken, who has been GacktJOB's bassist since then.

Despite often being labeled as "pop", few of his songs can be clearly said to belong to that genre. Gackt's music is characterized by a wide variety in musical styles which can range from heavy rock to romantic ballad. Traditional instruments are often used to accentuate electric guitar, piano, and other modern instruments. For these reasons, it is difficult to clearly assign Gackt's music to a specific genre.

Other Projects

S.K.I.N.
On May 25, 2007, the formation of the supergroup S.K.I.N. was announced which, including Gackt, consists of fellow pop/rock artist Miyavi, former Luna Sea guitarist Sugizo and X Japan co-founder Yoshiki. The group gave its debut performance at the Anime Expo convention in Long Beach, California on June 29, 2007 and plans to release an album. close

...one quick warning, you're about to see me ramble like nobody's business.

What can I say about Gackt? It's been...three years and one month since I first heard him, almost to the day. I can't believe that's all. Feels like a lot longer...I can't remember what it was like before I knew of him.

As lame as it may sound to anyone who doesn't fully understand, he is one of the most important and influential people in my life. Three years ago, I was an entirely different person (tch, we teenagers are so unstable), and back then...I fit most of the stereotypes of an average emo kid because I was terrible at coping with stress.

Then I heard Seki Ray - which is, to this day, one of my favorites of his. So haunting, yet so bizarrely relaxing...I had to go find more.

Not long after, I found Rain. Which immediately became my favorite song, and still is, three years later. At the time, I...did not understand more than five words of it (I can probably list them off). Now I understand every word of it and regularly read along with the lyric booklet while listening to it...and I love it even more. I still question how a song so mind-blowingly SAD can be so relaxing, without the music being completely unfitting and ruining the effect. But really the only reason I care is because I hope to be able to pull off the same effect in some of my own songs one day. I love that effect.

As lame as it may sound, because of his music allowing me to relax, and also because of how he inspired me to create my own outlet in my own music, I can very seriously say that I probably would not be alive today if not for him. Three years ago, I really was in terrible shape. O_O

I only wish I'd found him sooner.

It's kinda sad, actually - I'm coming up on being 20 now, and really the immediate assumption when someone mentions him to me and sees my reaction is that I have a crush on him. And that assumption is actually partially right - I do love him to death in near every way I can imagine, that being one of them. But above that, I see him as my greatest musical inspiration, as well as just...a hero to me.

In my honest (and admittedly biased) opinion, he has the most beautiful voice of any artist I have ever heard...plus the things he can do with it are downright amazing. I don't know a hell of a lot of male artists who can go into a falsetto and not sound strained, let alone who know WHEN to do it most effectively. Doomsday gives me the chills, especially when it reaches THAT point...just wow. And then songs like Wasurenai Kara and Cube, where he shows just how DEEP his voice can go...though many don't see it at first, he really does have a stunning vocal range. And the power and emotion he puts into everything...never fails to amaze me.

And then there's his piano playing...which I just have no words for.

He works so hard at everything he does...it's obvious by now that I admire him for it, is it not? Yet for much the same reasons as I admire him so much, I worry about him sometimes...but, that's just how I am. Ah well.

All in all, as I said...I just love him to death. I really do.

I give cookies to anyone who actually bothered to read all that. Told you I was going to ramble.

    ^ I read all that.
    Now where's my cookie? :D

Anyways, I absolutely LOVE Gackt! <3

He has the most amazing voice! I fall in love with him all over again every time I hear it!

His skill and talent never cease to amaze me. I even dedicated a journal entry to him when I got all excited about "Jesus", but it doesn't do him enough justice. Especially in comparison to PhantomRain's post... >.> But you did him justice. :)

But just read the post above mine if you want my full opinion... I totally agree with all of it. :)

    awesome.

Yes "vanilla" is about sex. Gackt is a grown man and its perfectly fine for him to sing about things. There's nothing wrong with it- it's life!I love gackt though. He's insanely talented, incredibly driven and maybe one of the most truly beautiful people I've ever seen.

Well, I rarely fit in discussions with most fangirls (I guess I'm a bit abnormal in many of those aspects), I can sure try to give you some insight.

For one, he really doesn't look 35. My guess would be somewhere around 28 at most if I didn't know better. And regardless of age, he is just...beautiful. I can't really say that only on my own opinion, because I'm very biased - I've seen people do some really ridiculous photomanipulations as a joke, and I still thought he was beautiful even after the fact. In that sense, I am completely blind. However, many of my friends do agree with me, so...I think I can use his appearance as a point here.

Also...I really can't say enough for his voice. Like you said, his voice is different from most...and in my opinion (and the opinion of many others), it is...absolutely wonderful. I just cannot say enough for it...so I won't even try. All I can say is...it's a very important factor.

There's also the fact that his perceived age can change at any given moment. One minute he'll be acting like he's in his 40s, the next he'll be acting like a young teenager (if that). Considering that I'm much the same way, it's just another thing to love about him. I get the feeling he'd be very fun to be around.

Then of course there's the amount of energy he puts into everything he does. He's one of the most driven, most dedicated people I've ever seen, and that shows. It shows through in his music, and in his live performances...in everything.

This is about as far as I can go without going into the extremely personal though. :joops:

Also, as Renannon said, yes, Vanilla is about sex. And songs of that type usually bother me...because most songs of that type that I hear are written and performed by people in the 16-20 age range. o_e; However, Gackt is a grown man, not to mention he pulls it off much more tastefully in his lyrics than most (even if the live is a bit...wild XD). Despite hating most songs with such themes, Vanilla is actually one of my top favorites.[edit]Last edit by PhantomRain on Sunday 07 Dec, 2008 at 22:59 +3.5%[/edit]

I agree with you Phantomrain. The lyrics/theme to Vanilla are generally something I don't care for but he does it with such taste and charisma....how could you not love him? lol he could be singing about tiny puppies and I'd still adore him :giggle:

really loving Gackt's music, been listening to it solidly for about 4 months now. Kind of found him by mistake on Youtube, just another ordiniary day killing time there, looking at random videos etc, and started watching his appearnces on shows like Domoto Kyoudai, i actually spent a good few weeks trawling through those, then watched Moon Child, so the first song was Orenji no Taiyou (with HYDE of course). Next few songs i liked were Rain and Fragrance, after that it snowballed, and it was a case of "i like that, and that, and that.... gah! i'm gonna have to buy some CDs"

right now there are a few songs that i'm constantly listening to again and again: Fragrance, Mizerable (which i really didn't like at first), White Eyes, Speed Master, Dears (LLV), Missing

Still love Nightmare, but now obsessed with ONE OK ROCK!!!

I love how he know his taste in fasthion and not just put different kind of clothing on. I love fashion and i know they he knows fashion. And you just said exactly whats on my mind.

As did I. Actually, a lot of his songs have managed to make me cry; if they didn't, the PVs did. If I were to make a list, it'd be easier for me to list the ones that didn't make me cry at some point or another.

That's what I love so much about his music. If the lyrics don't get you, the music probably will; if neither gets you, the PV or a live version probably will. Even most of his happier songs have just enough of a bittersweetness to them that it can bite pretty hard. And I love it. I just love how it always manages to make you feel SOMETHING.

I love Gackt. He is the first jrock artist I listened to. It was at the end of Dirge of Cerberus the song Redemption and I absolutely went crazy listening to that song. I actually beat the game hundreds of times over and over listening to that song. And I thought, "Who is this singer?! I love this song. I have to listen to it. Then finally when I got on the internet and looked it up and saw the video (which he looked awesome in. Oh... that long braided hair... :RBblush: ) and then I tried snatching up as many songs I could find of him. Redemption will always be my favorite for introducing me to him. I also like the pretty sound of December Love Song.

    lovely, lovely.

I love Gackt!!! [hehe...this will be a sorta long rant]

And it's not really about fangirling over his hotness [but seriously his eyes are amazing! And his clothes... and his dramatic entrances in live performances... and his hair and his long long fingers with those rings. and OMG variety shows! hella funny. all he has to do is just stand there and outcool everyone else x] ]

It's more about the music, the passion in the voice, the beauty in the lyrics. His vocal range is amazing with the low tremors and chilling falsettos all filled with so much unsatiable longing. You just listen to the chords, the flowing notes rending the air with sorrow, and his voice, the rich deepness that makes you shiver with its power. And that is what music is for. Some things in life are indescribable. You simply listen and feel, and it is sheer beauty.

And the lyrics. The lyrics are so vivid, so poetic!
"Falling sadness transforms into pure white snow..." -Last Song
"I embrace the torn rose to my chest, and fall into the crimson sea, I continue dancing on the piled bodies before I die..." -Lu:na

...All portrayed so beautifully in live performaces. His eyes are amazing. All the pain, all the passion, mingled together into that one intense look. You can see the sweat on his face, the way he moves and how his hands reach up in the air and how his elegant fingers curl, beseeching to the sky.

Last Song was my first Gackt song <3. It made me fall in love. And then I watched the music video with all the subtle details like the rose in the vase, first whole, then broken and torn, and then the designs on the wall which showed it was exactly the same place, first a place filled with love, then a place empty and abandoned... Fell in love again. And then falling deeper into obsession with each new song I hear... Redemption, Lust for Blood, Secret Garden, Cube, Lu:na, Tsuki no Uta, Rain, Todokanai... so many more and Le Ciel from his Malice Mizer days. *dies*

    He's amazing. <3
