TOKIO will remain a special ambassador to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, Tokyo's governor Yuriko Koike announced on Friday.
The group's involvement in the Olympic ceremonies had been up in the air since the end of April. Former group member Tatsuya Yamaguchi was swept in controversy after admitting to sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl back in February.
"Up until now, TOKIO has played a major role in creating momentum leading up to the event. I expect them to carry on," Koike said.
"There is only one word to described [Yamaguchi's actions]: deplorable," she added.
Yamaguchi's contract with Johnny & Associates was terminated due to his involvement in sexual assault.
