AKB48 has officially become the best-selling female artist in Japanese history.
The group's latest single "#Sukinanda" was released on August 30, 2017. During its first week of sales, it sold 1,089,288 copies, making it the best-selling single of the week according to Oricon.
With its latest single, AKB48 has sold 51,298,00 copies of its music (both CD and album sales), making the group the best-selling female artist in Japan of all time. The record was previously held by Ayumi Hamasaki who has sold 50,675,000 copies during her career.
AKB48 is now the 3rd best-selling Japanese artist of all time, overtaking Ayumi Hamasaki's spot. Mr.Children is the 2nd best-selling Japanese artist with 59,535,000 copies sold.
It is expected that AKB48 will become the 2nd best-selling artist in Japanese history within the next 2 years.
