AKB48 releases a statement through its official website updating fans of the possibility that its annual Senbatsu General Election event may be cancelled.
For its 9th annual event, AKB48 decided to do something different. Traditionally, the Senbatsu General Election is held at an arena where the winners are revealed in a grand ceremony. This year, the ceremony and preceding concert are scheduled to happen outdoors at Okinawa's Toyosaki Seaside Park SUN Beach.
The event, which will occur on June 17, is currently being set up. However, a stagnant front has brought heavy rain and thunderstorms to the area. The region has seen the most rainfall since data first began to be recorded.
Due to the record-breaking rain, the chance for thunderstorms, and potential for strong wind, staff is warning that weather conditions could force AKB48 to cancel its Senbatsu General Election event. The staff states that the safety of those attending is their top priority.
The annual Senbatsu General Election is one of AKB48's signature events, becoming a cultural sensation over the past decade. The event's cancellation would be unprecedented.
Voting for this year's Senbatsu General Election began on May 30, with NGT48's Yuka Ogino leading in first day voting. June 16 is the last day fans can cast their ballots for the election.
