After returning to Japan, from 1995 to 2003, Rie finished her primary and secondary education in Tokyo. In 2002 she learned guitar, and almost immediately began coming up with songs and recording them with a small tape recorder. She sent the demo tape off to a record company (Sony) and they signed her. Her first single was released in March 2004. Later that year, her song "Life is Like a Boat" was chosen as the Bleach ending theme, garnering her widespread recognition and demand. In 2005, a year after her debut, another song, I Wanna Go To A Place... was used as the Gundam Seed Destiny third ending song, and in 2006 her song Until I Say was used as the theme to the Japanese release of the 2005 British movie Heidi. In 2007, she performed the ending theme, Tsukiakari, to the anime series Darker than Black.
Rie fu's songs are often bilingual. Although most of her songs are primarily sung in Japanese, many feature entire verses written in English. Her debut album features two entirely English songs, "Voice" and "Shine," both of which she wrote herself. Of her songs written entirely in Japanese, at least two have later been released with English language versions.
Rie completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, London, in 2007. She has returned to Japan to further pursue her musical career.

Happy birthday!
Your much is such a find. I hear Joni Mitchil then suddenly its Sheryl Crow. I close my eyes on a song and hear a few lines and think "Which album (Joni Mitchel) then realize OH Its Rie! I love that you do some of your own covers just like Joni. I have been a fan of hers, once had all her work but had to split it when my partner and I broke up but will re-collect it along with your's now. Just don't let people say to you "Why you're just the Japanese Joni Mitchel" NO you are your self Rie and as such you may show influences from others but you are YOU Rie and I will always listen to you because you attracted me with your song and I picked your influences out then after ward heard that was one of your personal models. Rei, just keep being Rie and follow the music and art where it takes you. I leave near London and perhaps I will have the pleasure of catching one of your concerts the next time you are by here. Keep on with you are woman and don't let the executives button hole you for their own devious reasons. We luv you and I look for a long and rich life of your songs. Joni Michel almost quit once saying she was tired of being the musical taste for 150,000 fans but nothing else. Rie, if you influence 150,000 fans just look at the difference you will make in the world. How many of those will go into music because, or art for that matter. Oh woman you have the power of our Great Mother and just look to her for guidance and you will never fall short.
All my love as a fan to you,
