KAT-TUN has been a top group in Japan since debuting back in 2006. 2012 was no exception. While the group’s sales have not been as strong as in years past, their fan base is as strong as ever, allowing them to take the award for Best Boyband in the 2012 JMAs.

#1. Fumika

fumika is a fairly new artist, having debuted in mid-2011, with only 5 singles released to date and a new album scheduled for February. However, with her strong, rich and smooth vocals, coupled with deep, meaningful lyrics, there's no doubt that this young artist holds some great talent. Debuting with "Aoi Tori", which served as the ending theme for the popular anime, "Bleach", fumika gave us an upbeat and uplifting song, and followed up with "Taisetsu na Hikaru" an inspirational ballad that showcased her powerful vocals. Recently, she has moved onto a more R’n’B style, collaborating with popular artists such as WISE and showing the world her wide range of musical styles. One can only wonder where she'll decide to go next. Amazing vocals, beautiful lyrics, and musical diversity all wrapped up into one package? It's not hard to see why fumika has been voted this year's Most Promising Artist!

The MONSTERS is a unit group composed of SMAP member Shingo Katori and Tomohisa Yamashita. Despite only releasing 1 single and tough competition from the other nominees, fans of Yamashita rallied behind their idol, naming the group the best new artist of 2012.

Using a combination of different types of rock and metal in their music while still tackling the occasional ballad, it is no doubt that the GazettE is one of the most popular bands in Japan, especially within the visual kei scene. With female background vocals and different tunings that they used in their 2012 releases, the band created unique and interesting sounds that resonated with listeners, making them not only the favorite band among JpopAsians, but also the best rock act of 2012.

18 years have passed since GACKT made his debut in the music scene. While many artists fade away after such a long period of time, GACKT has managed to stay relevant. In 2012, the soloist has released 3 new singles and appeared in the live-action adaption of “Sengoku Basara”, all while getting into a relationship with ICONIQ. With his musical endeavors and love interest creating headlines throughout the year, it is no wonder that netizens have voted him as having the best male solo of 2012 as well as having the best musical ability.

With a combination of hard rock and high pitched synths and sequences, the GazettE created a rocking and interesting melody for their song “Dereangment”, the song whose music video has been voted the best of 2012. The main colors of the video are red, representing lust and blood, and black/dark blue, representing the dark side of the world. The video is kind of disturbing and confusing at first, but if you watch it more than once, you’ll discover a story line that explores prostitution und murder.

ONE OK ROCK is a band continually on the rise. Having formed in 2005, the band has seen their popularity grow over time, culminating in 2012 as they experienced their biggest year yet. With the release of their hugely successful single “The Beginning” as a theme song for the popular movie “Rurouni Kenshin”, the band reached a wider audience than ever before.
Due to their huge popularity, the band embarked on their 1st tour of Asia, allowing fans to experience firsthand the band’s energetic stage presence. A live DVD released earlier in the year helped cement them not only as a great band to listen to, but great band to watch, see and experience.
With everything going fantastic for the band, it is fitting that JpopAsians have named the band the best rockband of 2012, putting the cherry on top of a great year for ONE OK ROCK.

Starting out as a solo-project with support members, MEJIBRAY developed into a full-time band in June of 2011. Most of the members attracted attention while part of their former bands such as VanessA and TOON FACTORY, but through the band’s own unique music style, they have become popular from their own ability. With a blend of heavy rock, melodic passages, creative lyrics and Tsuzuku’s voice complete, the band’s future seems as bright as ever, making them the band to look out for in the future.

#1. HALLOWEEN JUNKY ORCHESTRA

HALLOWEEN JUNKY ORCHESTRA is a special project created especially for Halloween consisting of major artists in the J-rock scene. With many top artists from the Japanese rock scene participating in the project, it’s no surprise that fans found the band so appealing – there’s something for everyone! Despite only releasing one single, the band managed to capture our hearts with “Halloween Party”, compelling voters to name them the best new band of 2012.

#1. EXO-K

Despite their top-tier status and immense popularity, EXO-K started out as one of K-pop’s most hated groups after launching a pre-debut campaign of endless teasers that ultimately annoyed people rather than build hype. The group’s fortunes changed though as soon as their released their first single, “What Is Love”, on January 29th. The song and accompanying music video was our first real look at the group as a musical unit. Immediately, all negative feelings amassed during their teaser campaign faded away as they melted our hearts with one of the year’s best ballads, proving that they were the group to look out for in 2012.

The group showed they were more than just a vocal group with their 2nd single “History”, displaying dancing abilities that were just as strong as their voices.

With 2 singles under their belt, the group gave their growing fan base a fresh sound all their own with their 1st mini album, “MAMA”. The title track used occult chanting and abrupt draws of a bow on string instruments to create a sense of something larger than life in their music, leaving listeners with a strong impression after experiencing the unique sound. The song was a hit both commercially and critically, propelling them to the top of the K-pop world and making them the natural choice for favorite artist and best boyband.

After a sensational comeback with Big Bang, G-Dragon announced that he would be releasing a new solo album, the 2nd one of his career. Anticipation was high after his first solo album gave K-pop some of its biggest hits in 2009, but even with the bar set so high, the rapper managed to exceed expectations with one of the most versatile albums of the year.

Tracks like “Crayon” and “One of a Kind” showed off the G-Dragon we’re all familiar with. The songs put on an excellent display of why he is considered South Korea’s top rapper. While everyone expected those songs, G-Dragon surprised many with his song “That XX”, a touching, heart-felt ballad that packed more emotional punch than most ballads from artists who are famous in that genre.

With the rapper’s ability to excel at multiple genres, the strength of his newest album, and the unwavering support of his fans, it is no surprise that G-Dragon has been awarded with Best Male Solo and Best Musical Ability in the 2012 JMAs.

The beginning of 2012 saw a new bright star begin to shine in the K-pop world. Before her debut, Ailee created buzz for herself in October of 2011 through her collaboration with Wheesung on the track “They are Coming”, showing off her strong vocals and great potential, followed by an appearance in the popular drama “Dream High 2” as part of the fictional band HershE.

Ailee released her first solo single, “Heaven”, on February 9th, creating a strong impression with her booming vocals which won her praise with critics and the public alike. Later that year, she released her first mini album, “Invitation”, on October 16th, presenting listeners with more of her signature R&B style, as well as showcasing her strong vocals in the album’s ballads – and the rest of the songs too.

With one of the strongest voices in the K-pop industry, her natural beauty, and that indefinable “it” factor, Ailee has quickly risen to the top, standing out among South Korea’s slew of new female soloist in 2012, and even the country’s seasoned veterans.

EXO-K presented themselves as superhuman beings in the group’s 3rd music video, “MAMA”. With a blend of strong dance moves, a song with a unique sound, and a compelling backstory to the identity of EXO’s members, the music video for “MAMA” captivated audiences, making it the best music video of 2012.

2NE1 may not have had the most prolific year of the career of 2012, but nevertheless, the fierce foursome released an innovative new track, “I Love You”, on July 5th. The song’s build-up and progression from the slow, understated beginning, to the thumping, electronic-pop hook won over all who listened to it. The single also provided the group with their first true love song, showing the girls’ growth from being those hard girls from the street when they first debuted, to a multifaceted, diverse powerhouse that is capable of making magic out of any song they touch.

In addition to their Korean single, 2NE1 was busy with international activities as well. The group released a Japanese album titled “Collection”, presenting Japan their music in the nation’s language, as well as an original Japanese single, “Scream”, which gave fans of the group a single with their signature style and swag. The group also went on tour around the world, receiving praise from international news agencies for having one of the best concerts of the year. All of this combined paved the way for 2NE1 to be voted as the best girlband of 2012.

2012 was an explosive year for new boy bands. B.A.P, one of several breakthrough rookie acts to come out of 2012, not only showed potential to become one of K-pop’s greatest groups, but actually transcended rookie status, quickly reaching a status and level of popularity usually reserved for the industry’s seasoned veterans.

B.A.P had one of the most prolific years out of any K-pop artist, releasing 3 singles and 3 mini albums in their very first year of activity. Every release was met with critical and commercial success, showing that the group is more than capable of sustaining interest in them as they face off against so many other artists in the competitive market.

With their amazing talent and strong fanbase that continues to grow, it is certain that B.A.P has a lot in store for them as they continue their musical journey. This bright future makes them not only the most promising artist of 2012, but also the best new artist as well.
